The book reassesses the horse-figure in the tale of Mazeppa, as a Romantic myth in Western European culture. It is based on Voltaire's Histoire de Charles XII, Lord Byron's Mazeppa, the translation of this into French by Amédée Pichot. 'Mazeppa, page à la cour du roi de Pologne, est surpris en flagrant délit d'adultère. On l'attache nu sur un cheval sauvage qui l'emporte au grand galop à travers les steppes d'Ukraine... A la surprise de tous, il sera sauvé.' Cette histoire (légendaire ?) va apparaître en Europe chez Voltaire, Byron et Hugo. Elle deviendra un des mythes fondateurs du romantisme. Cet ouvrage développe une analyse intertextuelle des trois versions européennes afin de réévaluer l'importance de la figure du cheval dans l'Histoire de Mazeppa. |
