[For text in English see below.]

Yn ddiweddar mae’r prosiect AHRC yn Adran y Gymraeg wedi bod yn cwblhau geiriadur o’r enwau Celtaidd sy’n ymddangos ar fapiau’r Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World (gol. R. J. A. Talbert, Princeton, NJ, 2000; gw. http://www.unc.edu/awmc/batlas.html). Golygydd y geiriadur yw Dr Alexander Falileyev, sy’n gweithio i raddau ar sail gwaith ar Orllewin Ewrop gan ddau ymchwilydd Ph.D. ar yr un prosiect, sef Ashwin Gohil a Naomi Ward, ar yr un pryd â thorri tir newydd.

Er mwyn cael adborth, rhoir rhannau o’r gwaith ar y safle hwn ar ffurf pdf, gan ddechrau gyda’r llythyren A. Gobeithir ychwanegu enghreifftiau o lythrennau eraill yn y man. Rhennir y deunydd yn ddau:

  1. pdf yn rhestru elfennau’r enwau perthnasol;
  2. pdf yn cynnwys, mewn colofnau,
    1. rhif unigryw’r enw (ar gyfer croesgyfeiriadau) e.e. 6778 (ond lle mae’r Atlas yn cofnodi amrywiadau, defnyddir 6778a, 6778b, ayyb);
    2. cyfeiriad at y map yn yr Atlas a’r sgwâr perthasol e.e. 26A3 (gw. http://www.unc.edu/depts/cl_atlas/glocator.html);
    3. cyfeiriad at leoliad y lle yn ôl cornel de-orllewin y sgwâr (fel yn sustem y Grid Cenedlaethol Prydeinig, e.e. -10/38 ar gyfer 38° 40´ N / 9° 05´ W);
    4. gweddill y manylion.

Diolchwn yn gynnes i Dr Juan Luis García Alonso (Universidad de Salamanca) a’r Dr Eugenio R. Luján (Universidad Complutense, Madrid) sydd wedi rhoi sylwadau ar rai o’r enwau yn barod. Croesewir rhagor o sylwadau (pps@aber.ac.uk).

The Arts and Humanities Research Council project in the Department of Welsh has recently been completing a dictionary of the Celtic names which appear on the maps of The Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World (ed. R. J. A. Talbert, Princeton, NJ, 2000; see http://www.unc.edu/awmc/batlas.html). The editor of the dictionary is Dr Alexander Falileyev, working to some extent on the basis of work on western Europe by two Ph.D. students on the project, Ashwin Gohil and Naomi Ward, at the same time as covering completely new areas himself.

In order to get feedback, parts of the work are being placed on this website in pdf form, beginning with the letter A. It is hoped to add other letters shortly. The material is divided into two parts:

  1. a pdf listing the elements of the relevant names;
  2. a pdf containing, in columns,
    1. the name’s unique number (for cross-references) e.g. 6778 (but where the Atlas records variants, 6778a, 6778b, etc. are used);
    2. reference to the map in the Atlas and the relevant square e.g. 26A3 (see http://www.unc.edu/depts/cl_atlas/glocator.html);
    3. reference to the place’s location by the south-western corner of the square (as in the system of the British National Grid, e.g. -10/38 in the case of 38° 40´ N / 9° 05´ W);
    4. the remaining details.

We are very grateful to Dr Juan Luis García Alonso (Universidad de Salamanca) and Dr Eugenio R. Luján (Universidad Complutense, Madrid) who have already made comments on some of the names. More comments are invited (pps@aber.ac.uk).
