dc.description.abstract This edited volume builds on a special issue of the Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding edited by me in 2010, but contains many more articles/authors than the original collection. It evolves around the conceptual tension between the concepts of statebuilding versus state-formation (all authors refer to this conceptual idea in their chapters) and uses sociological and anthropological approaches to study the dynamics of states under intervention. While also other authors have taken sociological inroads into the study of statebuilding and state-formation (hence only 2 stars for originality), both the significance of the cases and authors assembled in the book as well as the rigour of single articles as well as the volume as a whole, are in my opinion above average. en_US
